Stroud House

Stroud House is a lovely Georgian house close to Freshwater and Freshwater Bay surrounded by a traditional cottage garden.

Parts of it date back some 400 years but it now provides 2 very comfortable rooms with en-suite bathrooms.

Local Walks & Attractions

Numerous footpaths and cycle routes are accessible nearby and the house provides an excellent stop over point for those walking or cycling round the IOW:

  • The Freshwater Way is almost on the doorstep and gives a lovely route to walk to Freshwater Bay and on up to Tennyson Down and the Needles.
  • Alum Bay has numerous attractions including a cable car to the beach, where you can take boat trips out to see the Needles up close and lies below Tennyson Down.
  • Headon Warren lies on the Northern shore with wonderful views of the mainland and Hurst Castle and footpaths lead down to Totland Bay and if completing a round the IOW walk Stroud House provides a good stop over in the West Wight for a peaceful nights rest.
  • Farringford House, Alfred Lord Tennyson’s home, which has been beautifully restored and is normally open to the public (closed due to COVID) is a 10/15 minute walk from the house.
  • In the Freshwater Bay area there is Dimbola Lodge, home of Julia Margaret Cameron, a Victorian photographer. This has a museum, gallery and cafe.

Food & Drink

Restaurants, pub and cafes to suit all tastes are avaailable within a short distance.

  • The Piano Cafe, near Freshwater Bay, serves delicious coffee, lunches and evening meals with live music on certain days.
  • The Red Lion is an excellent local pub and there are various takeaways in Freshwater Village close by, all within walking distance of the house.

Excellent location. My first visit to the Isle of Wight was an absolute delight. Our stay at Stroud House was a true treat and we felt incredibly fortunate to have stumbled upon it. Sarah's warm hospitality was evident in the lovely breakfasts she prepared for us in her charming conservatory. Her recommendations for places to visit and dine were invaluable and added immensely to our experience. What struck me most about the IOW was the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, not only among the people but in hte overall energy of the island. It was a truly rejuvenating and memorable experience.

Lovely B&B, very well situated for walking the Western end of The Island. Yarmouth just over 2 miles via the Robert Hooke trail and Freshwarter Bay only just over a mile with some lovely walking along the coast. Slept well, easy parking, the bed was comfy and the breakfasts was excellent with some interesting choices for those who are vegetarian or pescatarian. Highly recommend.
